Lesson 5: The End of World War II Learning Activity Summarizer
1 Read about Yalta and Potsdam Conferences pp. 18 – 19 $2.00 summary per conference
2 Close reading on the decision to drop the atomic bomb. Students will take on the role of the President of the U.S. in a televised speech to address the decision they reach. Cartoon summary
3 Complete discussion questions on the end of the war in the Pacific, on p. 21 One Word summary w/ explanation
4 Close reading on the Holocaust p. 22 and slideshow analysis of various scenes from the concentration camps. One Word summary w/ explanation
5 Read Cold War intro p. 13 3-2-1
Culminating Assignment Craft one sentence that summarizes the lesson. Students can work in groups of four. Determine then share best from each group.

 

  1. We will also begin working in our new unit booklet, the Cold War, specifically as follows:
Lesson 6: Causes of the Cold War Learning Activity Summarizer
1 Read key vocabulary on p. 2 of their Cold War Booklet (CWB) and rewrite into their own words. Create an analogy for each key vocabulary term, using common everyday scenarios.
2 Compare/contrast the Cold War alliances map of the world to the WWII alliances map of the world on pp. 2 and 3 of CWB. Students must hypothesize why these alliances changed based on how WWII ended and then cite evidence from prior material to back up their observations and conclusions. Create a cause and effect graphic organizer displaying the shift in alliances between WWII and the Cold War, and why those alliances shifted.
3 Close reading pp. 3 – 4 of CWB on background information and summary of the Cold War. $2.00 summary, with $.05/word.
4 Answer discussion questions on p. 4 of CWB. These discussion questions highlight the differences between the two superpowers and how those differences are the cause of the great distrust between them. Key word: This is an acrostic of the concept of the Cold War and students write sentences for each letter that summarizes information they have learned.
5 Examine the table on p. 4 of CWB that compares/contrasts the U.S. and U.S.S.R. and categorize each difference in terms of importance (high, medium, low) and explain why you categorized each difference in such a manner. Jeopardy Questions: Create one lower-order and two higher-order discussion questions for the table on p. 4 of CWB that compares/contrasts the U.S. and U.S.S.R.
Graphic Organizer Graphic Organizer: Create a compare and contrast graphic organizer highlighting the differences between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. Include how each country reacted to various events, not just ideological, political, and social reasons.

 

Culminating Assignment Using your graphic organizer above, write a paragraph or longer argument that assigns primary blame to either the U.S. or U.S.S.R. for the conflicts during the Cold War. Cite at least three specific pieces of evidence from the material we have covered in this lesson to back up your assertion.
